Why Epoxy is Used in Pharmaceutical Industry?

Epoxies are tough, very adhesive, and resistant to chemicals. They are used to make protective coatings and glues.Any of various artificial resins made of chains of epoxide rings.

The barrier created by epoxy prevents germs from growing while protecting the concrete slab from moisture, chemicals, and microbial growth. This characteristic is essential in lab settings where disease breeding must be prevented by maintaining sterility and cleanliness.

A recently published paper describes a study of the fungal and bacterial microflora isolated from an epoxy art object, which can grow on the surface of the object . That study raises the possibility that microorganisms that are capable of degrading epoxy exist.

Epoxies are an extensive and complex family of thermoset polymers that are used for their excellent adhesive properties, high tensile and compressive strength, plus their chemical and thermal stability. Technically, epoxy resins are chemically reactive intermediates containing at least two epoxide or hydroxyl groups.

Properties of Epoxy Resins:

  • Characteristics resistance to chemicals, particularly alkaline environments.
  • Heat resistance.
  • Adhesion to a variety of substrates.
  • High tensile, compression, and bend strengths.
  • Low shrinkage during curing.
  • High electrical insulation and retention properties.
  • Corrosion resistance.

Functions:

Epoxy acts as a concrete floor sealant. The floor coatings of companies manufacturing medicinal drugs should manage to resist most oils, acids, and solvents.

Each type offers certain benefits, but most pharmaceutical companies choose electrostatic charge resistant epoxy because it retards flame — a must-have when dealing with chemicals and drugs. Many pharmaceutical companies choose epoxy because it is non-toxic, seamless, and easy to clean.

Epoxy coating is a durable, protective substance used to prevent carbon steel tanks from degradation on the outside. Epoxy coatings offer superior resistance to abrasion, turbulence, harsh chemicals, and severe temperatures.

The main Components of Epoxy:

Epoxy resins usually comprise four ingredients: the monomeric resin, a hardener, an accelerator and a plasticizer. Manufacturers generally provide a standard formulation, however the hardness and flexibility of the polymerized block can be manipulated by varying the amount of the individual components.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Epoxy:

The strengths of epoxy flooring are relative affordability, high customizability, and great durability. On the other hand, the weaknesses of this material include long curing time, difficult installation process, and its possible slipperiness when wet or oily.
