Uses of Pass Box in Pharmaceutical Industry

Material Transfer

Pass boxes facilitate the transfer of materials (e.g., components, equipment, documents) between different areas of a cleanroom without exposing the cleanroom to external contaminants.  This helps maintain the integrity of the cleanroom environment.

Pass boxes have two doors, one on each side, which are interlocked to prevent both doors from being opened simultaneously.

This ensures that only one door can be opened at a time, minimizing the risk of cross-contamination between the two areas.

Containment

Pass boxes are often equipped with HEPA filters and interlocking doors to prevent the ingress of contaminants from the outside environment and the egress of particles from the cleanroom, ensuring a controlled, sterile environment.

Workflow Eficiency

They improve the efficiency of material and document transfer by reducing the need for personnel to physically enter and exit the cleanroom which can be time-consuming and introduce contaminants.

Pass boxes have several advantages, including:

  • Reducing the amount of time spent opening doors
  • Preventing air convection between various rooms
  • Reducing the amount of pollution produced.
  • Being lightweight and sitting flush to the cleanroom walls so that the accumulation of dust is avoided completely

Using passive ventilation, which uses the pressure differential between rooms, the airflow within rooms, and door opening as a motive force to transfer particles into or out of the box.

All cleanroom pass boxes include a mechanical and/or electrical interlock system designed to minimize the risk of cross-contamination.

Cleaning a pass box

  • Switch off the HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter blower.
  • Clean the pass box with a dry lint-free mop from inside to and outside.
  • Disinfect the pass box with filtered 70% IPA. Wipe out the cabinet, door, door handle, and hinges with a wet lint free duster.
  • Open the pass box and ensure the UV light is OFF.

Frequency of cleaning: Daily
